Pavers, bluestone, travertine, porcelain — installed on proper aggregate bases with drainage.
Concrete pavers, natural bluestone, travertine, and porcelain tile patios are installed on properly prepared aggregate bases with adequate drainage. We design patio shapes, patterns, and borders that complement your home's architecture.
Base preparation is the foundation of a long-lasting patio. We excavate 8-12" depending on material and soil conditions, install a compacted gravel base (typically 6-8" of #57 stone), a 1" setting bed of coarse sand (for pavers) or mortar (for natural stone and porcelain), and then set the field material with proper jointing.
Paver patios are set in sand and filled with polymeric sand — an excellent value option that is easy to repair if individual pavers shift or are damaged. Natural stone (bluestone, travertine, limestone) is set in mortar for stability and provides a more formal, architectural look.
Portcelain tile on exterior patios has grown in popularity due to its near-zero maintenance, frost resistance (when the correct frost-rated tile is specified), and stunning appearance. Proper substrate and drainage below is critical for longevity — we always install on a mortar bed or pedestal system to allow drainage.
